भारत के इतिहास में पहली बार सर्वोच्च न्यायालय (SC) के 9 जज एक साथ शपथ ले रहे हैं। इनमें तीन महिला जज भी हैं। मुख्य न्यायाधीश (CJI) एनवी रमण ने सभी न्यायमूर्तियों को शपथ दिला रहे हैं। इन नौ न्यायमूर्तियों की नियुक्ति के साथ SC की स्वीकृत संख्या 34 में CJI सहित 33 हो जाएगी। शपथ-ग्रहण का सीधा प्रसारण हो रहा है।
शपथ ग्रहण कर चुनी न्यायमूर्ति बीवी नागरत्न देश की पहली महिला CJI भी बन सकती हैं। कोरोना नियमों के पालन करते हुए शपथ-ग्रहण समारोह सुप्रीम कोर्ट भवन परिसर के सभागार में हो रहा है। यह पहला अवसर है, जब ऐसे शपथ-ग्रहण का टीवी पर सीधा प्रसारण किया गया। मंगलवार को 9 नए न्यायाधीशों के शपथ ग्रहण के साथ सुप्रीम कोर्ट
SC के जनसंपर्क कार्यालय की प्रेस विज्ञप्ति के अनुसार, यह भारत के सर्वोच्च न्यायालय के इतिहास में पहली बार है, जब 9 न्यायाधीश एक बार में पद की शपथ लेंगे। इस कारण समारोह स्थल को सभागार में स्थानांतरित किया गया है। परंपरागत रूप से नए न्यायाधीशों को पद की शपथ CJI के न्यायालय कक्ष में दिलाई जाती है।
ये हैं शपथ लेने वाले न्यायमूर्ति-
कर्नाटक उच्च न्यायालय के मुख्य न्यायाधीश एएस ओका और न्यायमूर्ति बीवी नागरत्ना, तेलंगाना उच्च न्यायालय की मुख्य न्यायाधीश हिमा कोहली, गुजरात उच्च न्यायालय के मुख्य न्यायाधीश विक्रम नाथ, सिक्किम के मुख्य न्यायाधीश जेके माहेश्वरी, केरल उच्च न्यायालय के न्यायाधीश न्यायमूर्ति सीटी रविकुमार, मद्रास उच्च न्यायालय के न्यायमूर्ति एमएम सुंदरेश, गुजरात उच्च न्यायालय के न्यायमूर्ति बेला एम त्रिवेदी और वरिष्ठ अधिवक्ता पीएस नरसिम्हा।
जस्टिस नागरत्ना 2027 में देश की पहली महिला CJI बनने की संभावना है। कर्नाटक में 30 अक्टूबर 1962 को जन्मीं जस्टिस नागरत्ना पूर्व CJI ई.एस वेंकटरमैया की बेटी हैं। सूची में सम्मिलित दो अन्य महिला जज- जस्टिस हिमा कोहली और जस्टिस बेला त्रिवेदी हैं।

Nine judges took the oath of office in one go
For the first time, the Supreme Court of India has got nine new judges at a time, including three women. All the nine judges were administered their oaths of office by Chief Justice NV Ramana today (31 August) morning. With the new swearing-ins, the strength of the Supreme Court of India (SC) now stands at 33, including the Chief Justice of India(CJI), out of the sanctioned strength of 34.
The swearing-in ceremony was held in the auditorium of the SC's additional building complex. Traditionally,n the oath of office to new judges is administered in the Chief Justice of India's courtroom.
“This is for the first time in the history of the Supreme Court of India when nine judges will be taking the oath of office in one go. In another first, the venue of the ceremony is shifted to the auditorium. This is done keeping in view the need for strict adherence to Covidnorms,” said a press release, issued by the SC's public relations office.
The swearing-in ceremony was telecasted live on DD News, DD India and live webcast would also be available on the home page of the official web portal of the Supreme Court.
The nine new judges took the oath-
Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka (who was the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court), Justice Vikram Nath (who was the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court),
Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari (who was the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court), Justice Hima Kohli (who was the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court) and
Justice B V Nagarathna (who was a judge of the Karnataka High Court).
Besides them,

Justice CT Ravikumar (who was a judge of the Kerala High Court),
Justice M M Sundresh (who was a judge of the Madras High Court),
Justice Bela M Trivedi (who was a judge of the Gujarat High Court) and
P S Narasimha (who was a senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General) administered the oath of office by the CJI.
Justice BV Nagarathna is in line to become the first woman CJI in September 2027. Justice Nagarathna, born on October 30, 1962, is the daughter of former CJI ES Venkataramiah. Three out of these nine new judges, Justices Nath and Nagarathna and Narasimha, are in line to become the CJI.
Justice Nath is in line to become the CJI upon the retirement of sitting apex court judge Justice Surya Kant in February 2027.
Justice Nath would be succeeded by Justice Nagarathna, who would have a tenure of over a month as the head of the judiciary. Narasimha would succeed Justice Nagarathna as the CJI and would have a tenure of over six months. The SC Collegium had on August 17 recommended these nine names for appointment as judges of the top court.
Later, President Ram Nath Kovind had signed the warrants of their appointment as apex court judges. The top court, which came into being on January 26, 1950, has seen very few women judges since its inception and in the last over 71 years has appointed only eight lady judges starting from M Fathima Beevi in 1989.
Presently, Justice Indira Banerjee is the lone serving woman judge in the apex court, after her elevation on August 7, 2018, from the Madras High Court where she was serving as the Chief Justice. While high court judges retire at the age of 62, the retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65.
The recommendation of these nine names by the five-member SC collegium headed by CJI Ramana at its meeting on August 17 had put an end to the 21-month-long logjam over the appointment of new judges to the top court. The impasse over the appointment had led to a situation in which not a single name for the judgeship in the apex court could be recommended after the superannuation of then CJI Ranjan Gogoi on November 17, 2019.
