हवाई अड्डे के उद्घाटन के साथ प्रधानमंत्री विभिन्न विकास परियोजनाओं का उद्घाटन एवं आधारशिला रखा, राजकीय मेडिकल कॉलेज की आधारशिला भी रखी। प्रधानमंत्री महापरिनिर्वाण मंदिर में अभिधम्म दिवस के अवसर पर आयोजित एक कार्यक्रम में भी सम्मिलित हुए, जिसमें दक्षिण-पूर्व एशियाई देशों के बौद्ध भिक्षु उपस्थित थे।

- हम सभी जानते हैं कि श्रीलंका में बौद्ध धर्म का संदेश, सबसे पहले भारत से सम्राट अशोक के पुत्र महेन्द्र और पुत्री संघमित्रा ले कर गए थे। माना जाता है, आज के ही दिन ‘अर्हत महिंदा’ ने वापस आकर अपने पिता को बताया था कि श्रीलंका ने बुद्ध का संदेश कितनी ऊर्जा से अंगीकार किया है

India is the centre of Buddhist faith and the inauguration of Kushinagar International Airport today is a tribute to Buddhism. Kushinagar International Airport has been built at an estimated cost of Rs. 260 crore. It will facilitate domestic and international pilgrims to visit the Mahaparinirvana Sthal of Lord Buddha. said PM Narendra Modi here in Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh) on Wednesday (20 October), at the inauguration ceremony of the Kushinagar International airport, which is being touted as a key move to boost Buddhist pilgrimage circuit around the world.
The inauguration of the airport was marked by the landing of a flight from Colombo (Sri Lanka), carrying a Sri Lankan delegation of over a 100 Buddhist monks and dignitaries\, UP Governor Anandiben Patel, CM Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister of Law and Justice, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister for Culture & Tourism G Kishan Reddy and others are also present on the occasion.
50 Airports made functioning-
PM said that the holy land of Kushinagar is now connected with the world. India is committed to develop the regions related to Buddhism and is working continuously to provide better connectivity to these holy places. The civil aviation sector in the country has seen an uptick in recent years. Under the UDAN scheme, approval to over 900 routes has been provided and on more than 350 of these routes, the air service has become operational. Over 50 airports, which were not operational earlier, have started functioning. The nation has taken a big step recently with regard to Air India. He said that this will infuse new life into the aviation sector.
We envision our aviation sector to run with utmost professionalism, where public convenience is given top priority. Guided by that, a number of reforms have been ushered, which have been widely appreciated. - PM Narendra Modi #Kushinagar
The Prime Minister said that India has also recently launched the Gati Shakti- National Master Plan. He said that this will enhance governance and would make the various infrastructure development sectors like road and rail to work with better coordination.
Earlier, the Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in his address applauded the UP government and civil aviation ministry for building Kushinagar International Airport in the record time of two years. He said, in the last 70 years, only 74 airports could be built in the country, but in the last seven years, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, 54 new airports have been built and now the country has a total 128 airports.
Tourism may rise by upto 20%
The new terminal is equipped to handle 300 passengers during peak hours. The airport is an endeavour in connecting with the Buddhist pilgrimage holy sites around the world. It will serve nearby districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and is an important step in boosting the investment and employment opportunities. Tourism inflow is expected to rise by upto 20%.
Kushinagar is an international Buddhist pilgrimage centre since Lord Buddha ordained his last disciple and uttered his last words to the sangha and attained MahaParinirvana, upon the death of his physical body, in 487 BCE. It is also the centre point of the Buddhist circuit which consists of pilgrimage sites at Lumbini, Sarnath and Gaya. Direct aviation connectivity with South Asian countries will make it easier for tourists arriving from Sri Lanka, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore to reach Kushinagar and experience the rich heritage of the region.

प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा, कि भारत बौद्ध धर्म का केंद्र है और कुशीनगर अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे का उद्घाटन बौद्ध धर्म को श्रद्धांजलि है। उन्होंने कहा कि भारत बौद्ध धर्म से संबंधित क्षेत्रों के विकास के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है और इन पवित्र स्थानों को बेहतर संपर्क प्रदान करने के लिए लगातार काम कर रहा
इससे पहले केन्द्रीय कानून और न्यायमंत्री किरेन रिजिजू ने कहा, प्रत्येक बौद्ध अनुयायी भारत की पवित्र भूमि का दर्शन करना चाहता है, जहां भगवान बुद्ध ने अपना पूरा जीवन बिताया और महापरिनिर्वाण को प्राप्त किया। उन्होंने दुनियाभर के बौद्ध अनुयायियों को कुशीनगर सहित इन पवित्र स्थलों के लिए हवाई संपर्क उपलब्ध कराने के वास्ते प्रधानमंत्री का धन्यवाद किया।
श्रीलंका के खेलमंत्री नमल राजपक्षे ने कहा, कि बौद्ध धर्म भारत की तरफ से श्रीलंका को सबसे बडा उपहार है। ये दोनों देशों के लोगों के संबंधों को मजबूत करता है। उन्होंने कुशीनगर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे के माध्यम से इस पवित्र स्थल के लिए हवाई संपर्क उपलब्ध कराने के लिए प्रधानमंत्री का धन्यवाद दिया।

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the Kushinagar International Airport, said that this was a `manifestation of decades of aspirations and efforts`
"This was my commitment and we have fulfilled it. We lay special emphasis on linking Buddhist destinations, improving hospitality facilities and ensuring the comfort of tourists. This airport will not only serve tourists from India but also Buddhists from across the world, including Sri Lanka, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Cambodia and other countries," he said.
The PM pointed out that other Buddhist destinations like Lumbini, Sarnath and Bodh Gaya were at a short distance from Kushinagar which added to the importance of the Buddhist circuit. He said, India had expanded its connectivity by increasing the number of airports and in the coming years, India would have 200 more airports.
