"आज यहां श्री संत ज्ञानेश्‍वर महाराज पालखी मार्ग और संत तुकाराम महाराज पालखी मार्ग इसका शिलान्‍यास हुआ है। श्रीमन् ज्ञानेश्‍वर महाराज पालखी मार्ग का निर्माण पांच चरणों में होगा। संत तुकाराम महाराज पालखी मार्ग का निर्माण तीन चरणों में पूरा किया जाएगा। इन सभी चरणों में तीन सौ 50 किलोमीटर से ज्‍यादा लम्‍बाई के हाइवे बनेंगे और इस पर 11 हजार करोड़ रुपये से अधिक का खर्च किया जाएगा। इसकी सबसे खास बात ये है, कि इन हाइवेज़ के दोनों तरफ पालखी यात्रा के लिए पैदल चलने वाले श्रृद्धालुओं के लिए, वारकलियों के लिए विशेष मार्ग बनाए जाएंगे।"

"जिस संत तुकाराम महाराज पालखी मार्ग का निर्माण होगा, उसके किनारे जो विशेष पैदल मार्ग बन रहा है उनके दोनों तरफ हर कुछ मीटर पर छायादार वृक्ष जरूर लगाए जाएं। जब ये मार्ग बनकर तैयार होंगे, तब तक ये पेड़ भी इतने बड़े हो जाएंगे कि पूरा पैदल मार्ग छायादार हो जाएगा। मेरा इन पालखी मार्गों के किनारे पड़ने वाले अनेक गांवों से इन जन-आंदोलन का नेतृत्‍व करने का आग्रह है।"

Palkhi Marg NH-965, Palkhi Marg NH-965G to be 4-Lane  

In an effort to facilitate the movement of devotees to Pandharpur (Maharashtra), PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for four laning of five sections of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi Marg NH-965 and three sections of Shri Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi Marg NH-965G, today (8 November) through video conferencing.

Speaking on the occasion he said- "the basic mantra of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas has been inspired from the teachings of Lord Vitthal and Bhagwan Vitthal has connected him with all other devotees."

He said, he also wants to see Pandharpur as one of the cleanest pilgrimage site in the country. The PM also observed that majority of warkaris come from farming community and noted that when the farmers prosper, the society too prospers. He said, a true ‘annadata’ connects society and lives for society.

During the event, the PM also dedicated to the nation more than 223 Km of completed and upgraded road projects at different National Highways for boosting connectivity to Pandharpur. These projects are-

Mhaswad-Piliv-Pandharpur (NH 548E), 

Kurduwadi-Pandharpur (NH 965C), 

Pandharpur-Sangola (NH 965C), 

Tembhurni-Pandharpur section of NH 561A

Pandharpur-Mangalwedha-Umadi section of NH 561A.

About 221 km of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi Marg from Diveghat to Mohol and about 130 Km of Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi Marg from Patas to Tondale-Bondale, will be four laned with dedicated walkways for ‘Palkhi’ on either side. These road projects are aimed at facilitating the movement of devotees to Pandharpur. Quoting Adi Sankaracharya, the PM said, Lord Vitthal is the symbol of happiness and Pandharpur is the land of joyousness.

The PM said, road is the gateway of development. He invoked former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee and said where roads are built development reaches there. The Swachh Bharat mission received support from the Warkaris (pilgrims) as they too started Nirmal Wari. He said, in Dindi-a spiritual procession, there is no caste discrimination. He also urged the warkaris to plant saplings alongside the pathway that leads to the main pilgrim site, which in future would grow into huge trees and provide shade.

Union Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray among others were present on the occasion.

Pandharpur- 
Pandharpur Wari is an age old tradition of annual pilgrimage of Maharashtra in which devotees from various parts of the state visit Vithoba Temple of Pandharpur by walking on road for several days and take Darshan of the deity on the occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi. Devotees from all the castes and sects participate in this annual pilgrimage and they are called Warkaris. 

Padukas of many saints including Sant Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram are carried in Palkhis on the specific routes to Pandharpur and the Yatra culminates on the day of Ashadhi Ekadashi in Pandharpur. Another pilgrimage is celebrated during the month of Kartik and it is culminated on Kartiki Ekadashi. 

Presently, the Warkaris are facing difficulties due to the vehicular traffic on these routes and accidents take place during the pilgrimage. But, with the development of Palkhi Marg and upgraded road projects, the Warkaris will be able to walk safely on these routes and travelling to Pandharpur will be safe and comfortable for devotees travelling to Pandharpur in private and public vehicles.
